La Liga Round-Up: Title Within Atletico’s Grasp

Atletico Madrid’s home slip up against Malaga proved to move them within just a point of securing the La Liga title, as Real Madrid fell to an away defeat at Celta Vigo. It was up to defender Toby Alderweireld to rescue Atletico with just 16 minutes to go, after going a goal down to Sanchez’s strike just 9 minutes earlier.

Whilst most Atletico fans would have been concerned, Real ultimately crumbled under pressure from two goals either side of half time through Celta Vigo’s Oliveira. Barcelona also missed a golden opportunity to close the gap on the league leaders, by failing to break down a resistant Elche side. A goalless draw benefitted the hosts rather than the visitors, with an unexpected point securing Elche’s top flight safety.

Almeria and Getafe also took big strides to retaining their top flight statuses this weekend by picking up vital wins over fellow strugglers Granada, and Sevilla respevtively. Both teams are now three points clear of the relegation zone going into the final day of the season. A draw for Osasuna and a loss for Valladolid in a seven goal thriller to already relegated Real Betis, puts both teams under immense pressure next week.

Athletic Bilbao will be jubilant at securing 4th spot and potentially European football next season, whilst Real Sociedad, Villarreal and Sevilla are stil fighting for European football next season going into the final day.
