Newcastle United provided a real shock to the system of Jose Mourinho and company on a rainy Saturday afternonn on Tyneside, as they stunned Chelsea 2-0 with the goals coming from Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy, both occurring in the second half. Chelsea had had the better of the opening period though, with Edin Hazard in particular looking quite bright on the wing as they often tested Newcastle goalie Tim Krul from distance. The Dutchman was on his game though and the score remained 0-0 into the break.
That’s when things began to take a turn for the bizarre as Chelsea suddenly played second fiddle to Newcastle as the Magpies began to boss the game around in the early stages of the second half. The work put in by their attackers finally paid off on 68 minutes with Gouffran heading past Petr Cech to send St. James; Park into delirium.
Remy added a power shot of his own only minutes from time to seal the upset win for Newcastle and deprive Chelsea of a vital chance to pick up up point on either Arsenal or Liverpool.
