The art of pitch invading has been doing the rounds recently over in the United States as many a fan or two has illegally gained access to the field during European clubs’ pre-season friendlies, most of them part of the Guinness International Champions Cup. The incidents reached a fever pitch a few days ago at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, where AS Roma and Real Madrid took part in one of these glorified friendlies. The invading began around the 86th minute when a handful of Real Madrid fans took to the field in search of pictures and personal experiences with their favorite Madridistas, with the number of pitch invading fans growing to around 30 before security (or what resembled it) finally took control of the situation. This incident follows others in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles over the past week as American soccer fans are embracing the sport’s culture just a bit too much, as this habit must stop before some crazed-maniac pulls the same stunt with potentially dire results.
