It was another case of dropped points at home for David Moyes’ Manchester United, as they allowed a late equalizer and point to visitors Southampton this time out. It was always a bit of a nervy match for United as they never truly dominated the match and rather had a good back and forth game with Southampton, but they still took the lead through a fortunate Robin Van Persie goal on 26 minutes. It was initially Wayne Rooney who was played through onto the goal of Artur Boruc, but Boruc stood his ground and repelled the shot from Rooney, who upon review appeared to be slightly offside on the play. Regardless, RVP was there to clean up the leftovers and claim the goal at Old Trafford.
The goal stood to be the winner for nearly 65 minutes before Dejan Lovren and/or Adam Lallana bundled home from a corner kick to level the match to the absolute delight of the vocal visiting support from Southampton. The ball quite literally pinballed in the box before squirting through David De Gea’s legs and in to keep Southampton in the Top 4 (for the moment) while United lag way behind in 8th (TIED WITH HULL) and drop points in a game David Moyes described as “Crucial to our title hopes”.
