Let me tell you about my top TV sporting moment.
October 2002. Gareth Gates was still popular, and Elvis Presley was making an unexpected posthumous return to the charts. But, at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium something even more unlikely
as about to happen.
I was in a bar down the road, glued to the TV, watching Wales prepare to face off against Italy. As someone with a strong Welsh heritage, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Dragons, but nobody
expected them to win. Why would we? History teaches us that Italy almost always spanks the Welsh. At football at least.
But this time was different; Wales held their own. They did more than that – in the 70th minute Craig Bellamy provided the crucial goal, sending Wales ahead 2-1, and sealing victory. And the pub
exploded. Hugs, cheers, people spilling out onto the street – a city in celebration.
Now, Wales’s triumph against (in all honesty) a sub-par Italian side isn’t a classic moment in the grand scheme of things. There have been more meaningful matches, and more exciting games. But
it mattered to me.
