Looks like Southampton fans have something else to be happy about along with their 4-1 thrashing of Villa yesterday following the announcement that they’d signed former Celtic keeper Artur Boric on a free transfer.
The 32 year old had been without a club since being released by former side Fiorentina following a 2 year spell. Boric was eligible to sign for Southampton outside of the transfer window due to him not being attached to any club. The Polish international keeper should provide the Saints with some much needed cover in goal – Kelvin Davis has been poor in my opinion, at least from what i’ve seen of him. His distribution has been very sub-standard, putting the club under great pressure against the likes of Man United, Arsenal and Man City. He’s also been slow to come off his line and been beaten far too easily, often on his near-post, in the games played so far. I’m sure he’s still a great keeper, but maybe not now at the Premier League standard required.
Boric is likely to compete more directly with 20 year old Paulo Gazzaniga, who replaced the dropped Davis for the game versus Wigan, performing well in the process. Boric will provide some much needed experience between the sticks, and has stated that its been a dream come true finally being able to play in the Premier League.
