Stoke 0-2 Manchester United

Manchester United secured a safe path into the semi finals of the Capital One Cup with a 2-0 win away at Stoke.

Goals from Ashley Young and Patrice Evra eventually saw off a resilient Stoke, who had only lost one game at home all season in all competitions prior to tonight.

Stoke started the game brightly and were pressuring Manchester United without really creating any cutting edge chances.

The match was marred by rain, which hindered the flow of the first half. Play was temporarily suspended in the 29th minute by referee Mark Clattenburg because of a freak hail storm and when it resumed Manchester United started to up their game.

Half time came with things still very much in the balance but the introduction of Javier Hernandez for Anderson in the second half really put United on the front foot.

David Moyes’ men took the lead in the 62nd minute when Young scored with an unstoppable effort from the edge of the box which gave the Stoke keeper no chance.

Evra then made sure of United’s place in the last four by curling home a right-footed strike with just over 10 minutes to go of the match.

Darren Fletcher was then introduced with less that ten minutes to go as Manchester United closed out the game and reached the semi finals.

Manchester United will face Sunderland in the semi finals.
