The February Farce

Once again we arrive at February.  A month which has become synonymous with Arsenal’s season imploding.  After the heavy defeat to Liverpool at the weekend and with a less than pretty fixture list coming up at over the next 3 weeks, could this spell the end of the title race for Wenger and his talented group?

The humbling defeat at the weekend showed some glaring problems with Arsenals defensive line.  Laurent Koscielny was reduced to the comic figure that would be more identifiable with his haphazard performances of previous seasons than the sturdy performances we have seen this season, that have led him and his fellow defensive line to keep the most clean sheets this season.

With Manchester United coming up this week Arsenal need to kick on from this loss.  Despite the loss dententing but not completely extinguishing their title hopes, the psychological factors of such a poor performance may yet be more telling. Mesut Özil for example cut a dejected figure on the pitch on Saturday, contributing to the loss of two if not three of the Liverpool goals.  At £42 million you would expect the player to be chase back if he’s offering nothing up front.   Wenger has said after the match he expects a good response from his star player when the Gunners hit the turf again on Wednesday.

Wenger quickly came out after the game and has urged the press and fans to not judge his team on their performance on Saturday but on their response to the loss in the forthcoming games.  This is a good move but does it detract from the fact that there is a possibility February could derail Arsenals season once again.

With Bayern Munich also looming on the horizon as well as another game in the FA Cup against Liverpool, Arsenal would look some what more like a team to contend with in the title race should they come out on top.
