The annual meeting of the Champions League and Europa League winners produced a thrilling contest on Friday night in Prague, with CL champions Bayern seeing off stern opposition in Chelsea after a tense pk shootout that followed a pulsating 120 minutes, with 34 of them played 11 vs. 10. It was Chelsea who got the match off to a brilliant start through who else but Fernando Torres, yes, the same one Chelsea have been trying to get rid of the past 4 or so months. It was a cracking goal from Torres though, with Chelsea’s number 9 smashing home an Andre Schurrle cross on the volley to put Chelsea in front after 8 minutes.
The response from the German side took a while, but it eventually came 2 minutes after the half with newly minted UEFA Player of the Year Franck Ribery firing in a screamer from outside the box that Petr Cech could have dealt with better in all honesty. The match remained poised at 1 apiece throughout the rest of regulation, but the momentum appeared to have shifted when Ramires was shown a second yellow and dismissed from the pitch late on, leaving Chelsea with only 10 men for the 30 minute extra period. Despite their setback, Chelsea still managed to take the lead in the early stage of extra time courtesy of Eden Hazard, with the Belgian maestro darting into the the box before finishing past a frozen Manuel Neuer in goal. (Shame he hasn’t scored in EPL yet, single handedly killing my fantasy team, but enough about me.) The game surely looked like it was going to the Blues as the minutes ticked on in extra time, but the match took a sudden late turn as Javi Martinez coolly finished past Cech in the dying seconds of the match after Dante set him up on a platter following a cross into the box. That left penalties to determine the Super Cup winner with Munich emerging the victors after 5 spot-kicks apiece with the crucial one coming from Romelu Lukaku as the Belgian missed his attempt for Chelsea and Bayern edged the victory 5-4 on pks.
