Paul Lambert yet again picked up 3 points at the home of his former employers as his Villa side secured a scrappy 1-0 road victory over Norwich City on Saturday afternoon. The Canaries appeared the better side for large chunks of the match, including the early going when they had a penalty given to them on 6 minutes for a Kieran Clark handball. They were unable to take advantage of their good fortune though with American keeper Brad Guzan rather easily repelling away the penalty of Robert Snodgrass to keep the match leveled at 0-0. Villa fans probably had their minds set on a draw after the 28th minute, when star striker Cristian Benteke slipped on the heavily watered Carrow Road pitch and appeared to injure his leg, forcing him off with deadline day signing Libor Kozak of Lazio replacing him. Kozak opened his account almost immediately after coming on though with the Czech international slotting into an empty net in the 30th minute to give Aston Villa the lead with Gabby Agbonlahor providing the splendid assist. There proved to be a lack of action following the Kozak goal, with neither side managing many attempts on goal for the remainder of the game. Any shot that did make it goal wards though was easily scooped up by John Ruddy of Norwich and Guzan of Villa with the latter’s efforts guiding Aston Villa to a crucial road win and dropping Norwich into the relegation zone in the process.
