Aston Villa kick off their new season with a home match against last seasons mid-table opposition Wigan Athletic. Villa will be without Gareth Barry after his suprise move to Manchester City, and apart from this notable loss they have strengthened during the summer with the signing of Leeds ace Fabian Delph, Newcastle’s Habib Beye and the currently injured Stewart Downing, whilst it appears that Wigan have done quite the opposite, losing their manager Steve Bruce to Sunderland, and their star performer Antonio Valencia making a big money transfer to Manchester United.
Lower-league success story Roberto Martinez has been brought into Wigan as Bruce’s replacement, and he will be trying his best to proove that he has the credentials to manage at this level. Although the club has lost several big names in recent times (Winston Palacious’ move to Tottenham Hotspur last season, Lee Cattermole following Bruce to Sunderland), the club should still have money to spend and they will be hoping to bring in several new faces before the transfer window closes. They have made several signings already, with Jason Scotland costing £2million from Swansea City, Jordi Gomez from Espanyol and young-star James McCarthy.
Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill will be trying his hardest to bridge the gap between his club and the top 3 clubs of last season, and may well have his work cut out with the inevitable rise of Manchester City. Many people believe that this season there will no longer be a top 4 or 5, and that instead it will become a top 6 (Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa/Everton, Manchester City).
Villa had a succesful season last term but with the signing of Delph and Downing the fans will expect the club to push on, and it will be very exciting for them to watch a side full of young English talent.
It looks like Wigan Athletic will struggle this season around, many people believe that they could be another team close to relegation this year unless they can bring in some new talent. On the other hand I think Aston Villa will push on this season, although personally I can’t see them improving much on last season’s finish. I would expect Villa to see off the challege of Wigan when the two clubs meet on the opening day of the season this Saturday.
My Prediction: 2-1
