Kick Off : 13:30 GMT
Venue : Old Trafford, Manchester

Last seasons Premier League champions Manchester United will kick off their new season against the newly-promoted Birmingham City, with City manager Alex McCleish probably happy to get this one fixture out of the way, although he will be hoping for a positive start which the club can build on throughout the season.

All eyes will be on Manchester United to see just how they cope with the losses of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, with many people expecting that the club will struggle to find as many goals after Ronaldo finally joined Real Madrid. Man Utd have signed Antonio Valencia as the replacement for Ronaldo, and it will be interesting to see how the player fits in with his new team. It seems that everyone has had their say on Michael Owen joining United from Newcastle, and this will probably be one of Owen’s biggest seasons as he hopes to break back into the England team in time for the World Cup finals.

Birmingham have spent big during the summer, signing striker Chrisian Benitez for £9million, central defender Roger Johnson from Cardiff for £5million, Scott Dann from Coventry for £3.5million, and Barry Ferguson from Rangers for £1million. They have also strengthened their squad by signing the likes of Lee Bowyer, Gregory Vignal, and Joe Hart (on loan from Man City). They have released several players including Stephen Kelly and Radhi Jaidi.

As the Premier League newboys many will undoubtebly expect Birmingham to struggle and to go back down to the Championship this season, but as the champions of the Championship I’m not too sure if they will struggle as much as other, smaller Premier League clubs. They have signed some quite big players during the summer, and have done well to improve their squad, and with Alex McCleish in charge they have someone with all the right experience.

When Man Utd play Birmingham I expect only one winner, especially with Man Utd looking sharp and crip during the Community Shield final against Chelsea despite losing the game. United had a very poor start to the season last year, and Ferguson will be working even harder to make sure the club get off to the best of starts, looking to set a high benchmark for the rest of the 2010 campaign.

My Prediction: 3-0
