Who is the Greatest Football Player of All Time?
The debate rages on: who is the best footballer the world has ever seen? The main candidates are some names too, Pele, Maradona, Zidane, Alfredo Di Stefano and Johan Cruyff being the ‘legends’ and the more modern-day players such as Messi and Ronaldo.
I am personally convinced that although Pele and Maradona set the world alight and increased the expectation of so many football fans around the world, Messi has created a new level of brilliance, a new stage upon which only he performs.
Regularly hitting 50+ goals in a season and supplying the crucial pass to around 20 each year, Leo Messi has a hand in the majority of FC Barcelona’s goals. While Cristiano Ronaldo’s statistics are similar, you could argue that without his huge and built frame, he wouldn’t be the player he is. Messi is technically perfect. If you were to base the answer to this question on national team performances and success, Diego Maradona would win: he single handedly turned a very average Argentinian team into a World Cup winning one.
The diagram shows that Messi does not only attempt more dribbles per game than Ronaldo, he has more success when doing so too. However, Messi has more success when finding the back of the net too: he takes less shots on average per game than Ronaldo but scores almost 25% more than the Portuguese.
We are all very, very lucky to be able to be alive in a generation where both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are playing. They are most definitely two of the best ever players but Messi’s natural ability and technique gives him the title of the best player in the world.
