Thrilling Merseyside Derby Ends In Draw

An exquisite 90 minutes of football was on display this afternoon at Goodison Park where Everton and Liverpool combined for 6 goals, split all square at 3 apiece in this year’s 1st installment of the Merceyside Derby. The match got off to an absolutely flying start with Philippe Coutinho giving Liverpool the lead after only 5 minutes via a back post poke off a corner before Kevin Mirallas answered for the Toffees 3 minutes later, his effort prodded past Simon Mignolet following an Everton free kick.

The scoring then resumed on 19 minutes when Luis Suarez did what Luis Suarez does, scores spectacular goals with this one being a low curling freekick that evaded the grasp of Tim Howard. A huge turning point in the match came in the 33rd with Mirallas performing a true horror tackle on Suarez, coming in from behind, late, and viciously by kicking out at the Uruguayan. Referee Phil Dowd incredulously only gave out a yellow for the incident, raising the anger of Liverpool and their traveling support.

The second half was a bit more subdued than the first, but it still had plenty of action it with Joe Allen failing to put the Reds up to on the hour mark with a real clangor from about 8 yards out. The tide had appeared to shift on that play and a late Romelu Lukaku brace seemed to have won the game for Everton, but a fizzing header from Daniel Sturridge 2 minutes from time stole a point for the visiting Reds at Goodison.
