Liverpool will be hoping to build on their Premier League finish last season and will be desperate to get off to a good start against a strong Tottenham Hotspur side. Last time the two sides met at White Hart Lane Spurs managed to snatch a late victory, and Rafa Benitez will be hoping to get at least a point when the two teams meet on Sunday afternoon.
Both sides have had busy summers, as usual Tottenham have spent a lot of money on signing new players but have also received big money by selling Darren Bent to Sunderland for £10million and Didier Zokora to Sevilla for around £9million. Harry Redknapp has again been re-united with big frontman Peter Crouch, spending £9million to buy him from Portsmouth. They have also signed Sebastien Bassong from Newcastle for £8million and Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker from Sheffield United for a combined fee of £10million.
Liverpool have similarly received big money during the summer but have spent a fair amount too – Xabi Alonso joined the Real Madrid revolution for £30million, as did Alvaro Arbeloa for just £3.4million. Alonso was replaced swiftly by the signing of Alberto Aquilani from Roma for £20million, and right back Glen Johnson was signed from Portsmouth for £17.5million.
Spurs now have a much bigger, stronger squad this season and they will be hoping to push further up the table and to qualify for a place in Europe, although this will be no easy task, especially when the likes of Aston Villa and Manchester City have all strengthened themselves during the summer too.
Liverpool will be desperate to steal the Premier League title back from Manchester United, and they will be praying that the likes of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard can stay clear of injuries this season.
I would expect this to be a very entertaining game of football as both sides have some very talented attacking players, so this should be a fast-paced match with plenty of goalmouth action.
