A struggling Manchester United side travel to another side who struggled in their last game – Wigan Athletic. Both teams won their opening fixture and have gone on to lost their second match of the new Premier League season.
Wigan got off to a superb start under their new manager Roberto Martinez when they beat Aston Villa 2-0 away from home. However this great start was let down by a 1-0 home loss against Wolves. The Premier League champions Manchester United won their opening game in a cagey-affair at Old Trafford against Birmingham City, winning 1-0 through a Wayne Rooney goal. Their second match of the season was against Premier League new boys Burnley, a game which they lost 1-0 at Turf Moor.
Sir Alex Ferguson will be desperate for Manchester United to put their bad start behind them, as in the case with many of the previous seasons, and to start getting back to winning ways. Many critics are already jumping on the Cristiano Ronaldo bandwagon, stating that Man United will not win anything without him and that he is irreplaceable etc, so the manager and the team will be desperate to shut the critics up and put in a good performance.
Roberto Martinez will be also be desperate to avoid back to back home defeats in just his second home game in charge of Wigan, and so will be trying his best to at least get 1 point from this game.
With Antonio Valencia yet to make his mark in Manchester United’s colours he will be itching to play against his old club Wigan, and he is sure to get a good reception from the Wigan faithful despite his move on to United.
I expect this to be a tough match for Manchester United against a Wigan side who will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing loss against Wolves. I still expect a Man United win however, and I expect them to put on a much better display after their 1-0 loss by Burnley.
